When it comes to vegan-friendly sweets shops, Portland’s got options. There’s Back to Eden Bakery on NE Alberta Street, Petunia’s Pies & Pastries downtown, and Doe Donuts on SE Powell Boulevard. But vegan bakeshop Hail Snail is bringing something new to the scene in the form of plant-based cinnamon rolls!
That’s right — come September 2019, the Northeast Portland concept will begin serving up fresh-baked cinnamon rolls garnished with toppings both savory and sweet (think everything from pistachios and sesame seeds to maple cream and carrot bacon — um, yum).
After first debuting Hail Snail as a wildly popular pop-up at markets and food festivals around the city, Jaq and Karly, the folks behind the family-owned vegan venture, decided it was time to find a permanent home for their handmade cinnamon rolls (or “cinna-snails”). So, they rallied the support of the local community, and thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, you’ll now be able to get your cinna fix whenever you please. Can we get a “hail” yes?
Hail Snail’s menu is sure to induce some wide eyes and maybe even a little drooling. After all, it includes 10 seriously sweet creations like the graham cracker-laden Explorer (with mini marshmallows, chocolate sauce drizzle, and mini chocolate chips) and the carrot bacon-topped Quake (with banana, pistachios, and chocolate chips). They also plan to offer a monthly savory flavor like pesto, pizza, and barbecue jackfruit.
Given the options, we doubt you’ll have trouble finding something that calls to you, but just in case you can’t make a decision, the wonderful people at Hail Snail offer a “create your own” option — with more than 30 toppings at your fingertips. Choose from sprinkles, gluten-free pretzels, whipped cream, lemon-blueberry icing, chips, and more for the cinnamon roll of your dreams.
The creators of Hail Snail care as much about making great cinnamon rolls as they do about sustainable sourcing and natural ingredients. That’s why all chocolate and coffee beans used in their delicious treats are fair trade, all colors are created naturally, and every ingredient is, of course, totally vegan.
The business may be small, but Hail Snail’s owners see themselves as part of something much larger — like the move toward an increasingly plant-based world. Luckily, you won't have to wait much longer to indulge in their melt-in-your-mouth, gourmet cinnamon rolls.
