RACE, RUNNING, SOCIAL
There’s no denying the excitement of St. Patrick’s Day — hey, what’s not to like about the whole community coming together over green beer and good vibes? But while cities across the US celebrate this Irish-themed holiday, none throw down like this PNW-style celebration.
So, dust off that shamrock necklace and grab your green sweatband — the Shamrock Run Portland is taking over downtown on March 15, 2020!
Back for its 42nd year, the Shamrock Run Portland is Oregon’s largest annual running and walking event. It also marks the unofficial start of running season in the PNW. So, you can understand why tens of thousands turn out for the festive, weekend-long occasion each spring.
Whether you’re an avid runner or more of a leisurely jogger, the Shamrock Run at Tom McCall Waterfront Park has a race for you. There’s the 5k, an easy out-and-back route with a party-in-the-streets energy that’ll make you forget you’re actually crushing 3.1 miles. And if you want to tack on more mileage, sign up for the flat and fast 8k course — it has a reputation for helping runners hit a new PR.
Let’s say you really want to earn that celebratory beer. The 15k has you covered with an elevation gain of 783 feet and views of the city skyline and the Willamette River waterfront to help carry you through. Or, lace up for the half marathon — it’s a classic Portland race peppered with muscle-burning hills and is the perfect way to kick of your marathon training.
No matter which distance you choose, you can count on a second-to-none post-race festival waiting for you at the finish line. With the hard work behind you, all that’ll be left to do is grab a pint at the iconic green beer garden, enjoy live music from local bands, and hang out with your neighbors, fellow runners, and friends.
There’s plenty of fun planned in the lead up to race day, too. On Friday and Saturday, head over to the Oregon Convention Center to enjoy the two-day Fitness Fair. With over 60 exhibitors and more than 80 vendor booths featuring all your favorite health and wellness brands (plus a generous amount of samples), it’s just the thing to get you amped for Sunday’s sweat-fueled party. We’ve also heard rumors that there will be a happy hour with specials on Portland’s own Widmer Brothers Beer.
It won’t be long now until the most anticipated running weekend of the year is here. So, snag your ticket for the Shamrock Run Portland and join the 25,000 others that have made this race St. Patrick’s Day tradition.
