Get to Know Fried Egg I’m In Love, a Popular PDX Food Truck & Brick-And-Mortar Shop

Call it weird. Call it hipster. Call it “so Portland”. Once you taste these sandwiches, you’ll be calling it genius. Fried Egg I’m In Love is a Portland staple that’s been serving up signature egg sammies from a yellow food truck (now parked in Pioneer Square) for close to a decade. And, thanks to the favor of the egg gods, it’s serving them up from a brick-and-mortar store on SE Hawthorne.

They opened in January 2019, this restaurant is a must for any brunch list. To use an awful egg pun: we promise it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

Food Truck Beginnings

Fried Egg I’m In Love began the same way many of Portland’s star restaurants do — as a food truck. Its egg sandwich menu was simple and creative, and soon the savory sammies attracted waits an hour long.

Of course, these aren’t exactly the egg sandwiches of your childhood. Fried Egg I’m In Love’s sandwiches are more creative, more adventurous, and maybe even a little messier (we’re not complaining). And their names are as creative as their stacks. Take the Yolko Ono, for instance, which features homemade pesto, parmesan, and a hand-pressed sausage patty. Or the Egg Zeppelin, which includes two homemade sausage patties, a couple slices of Tillamook cheddar, two eggs, and aardvark aioli — a garlic mayo made with Secret Aardvark Habanero Sauce.

Of course, there are simpler, possibly healthier sandwiches, too. Their vegan breakfast burrito is a smash hit and the house vegan sausage is good on just about any creation. But our favorite is the Free-Range Against the Machine with familiar fixings like avocado, tomato, and havarti cheese. All sandwiches are served on sourdough bread from Portland French Bakery, though, any sandwich can be made gluten-free upon request. Plus, the eggs are (of course) sourced from a local farm. This is Portland, after all.

All-Natural Next Step

Opening a brick-and-mortar space was the natural next step for Fried Egg I’m In Love. It provides a space for Portlanders to sit down and eat. It also makes it a little easier to expand the menu; Fried Egg devotees can enjoy a few additional items with the new digs. Owner Jace Krause even added side options, like their Al Greens Jr. salad and hash bites, though, it’s possible there will be some larger additions in the months to come.

For now, stop by the shop and chow down on one of the menu’s delicious different egg-sandwiches. We promise they’re all pretty egg-cellent.
