Portlanders are stereotyped by their health-forward ways. In addition to obsessively biking everywhere and having a bounty of locally crafted everything (kombucha, beer, you name it), we also really like to be conscientious of what we put in our bodies. Some of us limit meat. Others avoid dairy or animal products. This can make it difficult when planning, say, a dinner or weekday happy hour. Accommodating friends’ palates and dietary restrictions can seriously limit the options. Well, that’s the case in most cities.
Luckily, Portland has quite the selection of vegan spots that boast creative bites — all meant to be washed down with a vegan-friendly beer or craft cocktail before riding our fixie home. We’ll cheers to that.
No Bones Beach Club
No Bones Beach Club helps you indulge in all your guiltiest pleasures — like eating “cheese” or pretending you live in a state with sunshine. Retreat inside this beach club-style restaurant in North Portland to enjoy Jackfruit Flautas, Beer Battered Avocado Tacos, and Mini Nachos. Wash it all down with a gluten-free Mai Tai or Piña Colada to keep that summer theme going. Happy Hour: 4 to 6pm
Come for the pisco sours, stay for the sopaipillas con queso (which we still can’t believe are vegan, by the way). Epif in Northeast Portland serves up colorful plates of South American-inspired bites like portobello and cremini mushroom ceviche, vegan mozzarella empanadas, and mashed potato rolls stuffed with vegan cream cheese (known as Causa). We’re willing to bet this menu has something for even those non-vegan friends of yours. Happy Hour: 4:30 to 6:30pm
Expect your classic bar fare, except tailored to a vegan palate. Choose among a cashew-cheese mac, buffalo tofu bowl, Jalapeño Mushroom Burger, Coconut Tomato Bisque, or a vegan Grilled Cheese. We suggest enjoying a plate before snagging a craft cocktail and heading to the karaoke room. Happy Hour: 3 to 7pm
The Bye and Bye
Owned by the same group that opened Capitol, this Northeast bar features a similarly vegan lineup on the menu. Think spaghetti with veggie meatballs, grain bowls topped with nutritional yeast, cornmeal tempeh sandwiches, and even a vegan chili pie (topped with Tofutti sour cream). Fitt Tip: happy hour pricing is offered on a couple of these items, including the Chili Pie and grain bowl. Come early. Happy Hour: 4 to 7pm
Planning a happy hour with your co-workers or non-vegan friends? Head to Star Bar in Southeast Portland, where there’s a little something for everyone. Order the buffalo chickpea fritters, veggie sliders, or house-made black bean burger. Your friends can dine on cheesy nachos and buffalo wings. See? Everyone’s happy. Happy Hour: 4 to 8pm
White Owl Social Club
Creative cocktails like the Rico Suave (Sauza tequila, pineapple, Campari, and lime) are best when served with a good meal. We suggest the breaded cauliflower in buffalo or barbecue sauce, the warm nachos drenched in vegan cheese, or the tofu bites flavored with a garlic chili sauce. This bar boasts an airy patio, making it an especially popular spot in the summer — and their vegan fare makes them just that much better in our book. Happy Hour: 3 to 6pm
Blossoming Lotus’ live nachos are probably the most talked about food at this vegan hot spot. Think thick nacho cheese sauce, zesty pecan chorizo, and cool cashew sour crema. We recommend ordering several plates of these and pairing them with a couple cocktails (or a vegan beer). If you’re extra hungry, order the vegan bibimbap, flavored with peanut soy curls and a roasted garlic aioli slaw. You can thank us later by sending us an order of the nachos. Happy Hour: 3 to 5pm
