If you’re familiar with indoor cycling, then you know that these classes are a mash-up of killer cardio and blaring beats. And while we’ve seen other fitness fads come and go, sweating it out on a bike has stuck around — and is only getting better.
Honestly, there’s a lot to love. With stadium-style set-ups, flashing lights, and surround sound, cycling studios in San Diego have really stepped up their game. Not sure where to ride? Don’t sweat it — we’ve got you covered. There are plenty of places for newbies and seasoned cyclers to rock their ride around town. So clip in, it’s go time.
With four locations in the San Diego area, there are lots of opportunities to party on a bike with Rush Cycle. Clip in to join the #RushFam for a high-energy, calorie-scorching workout. The signature 45-minute Rush Ride is a dance party with 40 of your closest friends, set in a black-lit room. An energetic instructor will lead you through a full-body workout set to the beats of carefully-crafted playlist. Themed rides (Britney vs. Christina, anyone?), a strong community, and regular social media contests will turn you into a Rush addict in no time.
This chic downtown cycling studio delivers a motivating, heart-pumping workout every ride. The lobby area feels like a posh hotel, complete with complimentary towels and shoes. Ready to rock? With surround sound, custom LED lighting, and theater seating, the minutes will fly by as you jam out and pedal hard. Bust a move in a Pure Rhythm class set to the beat of the music, or power up for sprints, intervals, and climbs in Pure Power. Either way, your legs will be shaking.
If you’re looking for a small neighborhood studio, Evolve Fusion Fitness is the perfect place to ride and get to know some of the friendly locals who frequent the space. On a tree-lined street in Mission Hills, the mini sanctuary is home to indoor cycling and gravity strength training (glide your way to rock hard abs). Crank out the calories in Pedal & GLIDE — the perfect mix of endurance cycling and low-impact strength training.
La Jolla’s SPARKCYCLE delivers a 45-minute full-body workout that’s all about the performance. Instructors double as club DJ, pumping up the music, adjusting the LED lighting, and leading the class through a sweaty choreographed routine. And thanks to stadium seating, everyone has a view of the mirror, so you can dial in your form (and your dance moves). Head’s up — they now have a second studio in Liberty Station, so you’ve got double the chance to #SparkItUp.
The classes at Implicit Cycling in Mission Gorge will push you to your max. Take a Functional Threshold Watt test (offered every Saturday) to determine your unique FTW, enter that number on your bike before class starts, and then hold on. There’s no coasting at Implicit. Every bike gives instant feedback on energy exertion and pedal speed, with lights on the bike taking you through targeted color zones (red lights mean the opposite of stop). Top that off with small class sizes and an energetic instructor, and you’ll be drenched in sweat after the one-hour push.
North County, we haven’t forgotten about you! Studio SWEAT in 4S Ranch is about to be your new go-to for spin fusion classes that combine indoor cycling with strength training. Want to tone up from head-to-toe? Try their TRX-Spin-Sculpt class — a 70-minute full-body attack utilizing the TRX Core Suspension Rack (the largest in San Diego!). You can even workout in the comfort of your own home (and PJ’s) with Studio SWEAT onDemand. So, now you won’t have any excuses for not getting in your daily sweat sesh.
Pedal on over to Del Soul Fitness (formerly Ride On Indoor Cycling) in Pacific Beach for a 60-minute heart-pumping cardio workout. Del Soul is all about the classic indoor cycling experience, so you won’t be doing any push-ups or throwing around weights on your bike this boutique studio. Those come AFTER the ride during a Strength Circuit class — 25 minutes of low-impact upper and lower body work. With 12 bikes, class sizes are small, which just means you won’t find anywhere to hide while you’re huffing and puffing up a hill.
San Diego — are you ready to Rock Your Ride? CycleBar in Hillcrest and Carmel Valley is getting the San Diego cycling community seriously sweating. CycleStar instructors wear many hats during class—DJ, lead motivator, and drill sergeant—all while leading you through a challenging 50-minute ride in the CycleTheatre. The tiered theater holds up to 55 bikes, flat-screen TVs, personal data monitors displaying your CycleStats, and Vegas-level studio lighting. Ready to rock, but new to cycling? Sign up for a FREE Intro to CycleBar ride to learn the basics.
Tackle your next hill at Cycology in the heart of Encinitas. The boutique studio offers cycling, TRX training, and combo rides to mix up your cardio routine. For the competitive cyclists in the group, grab a heart rate monitor strap before class. You’ll be able to track your progress on a large TV and pedal your way to the red zone. Cool off after the high-intensity ride with a chilled eucalyptus towel (trust us — they’ll make you earn it).
Chances are you’ve heard of this cycling studio. Thanks to a cult-like following in major cities across the US and Canada, SoulCycle has become household name in the fitness world. Which makes health-obsessed La Jolla the perfect spot for their San Diego location. Head to the super-chic studio in UTC for a heart-pumping workout complete with all the flashing lights and bumping music that have made SoulCycle famous.
The hybrid classes at this boutique studio in Downtown San Diego make it easy to get a full-body workout in in less than an hour. Each of their multi-sport classes start off with 30 minutes of high-intensity cycling and then transition into a half hour of either low-impact strength training or Vinyasa yoga, depending on your preference. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your day with a full tank of endorphins.
With two studios in San Diego and some of the lowest prices in the area, SpinSD is the perfect studio for fitness junkies looking to try out a cycling class without having to commit to a pricey membership. The small class sizes and laid-back style of instruction keep things fun and comfortable, rather than super-competitive — you’re guaranteed to walk away with a killer sweat and a few new friends.
Taking a class at Oxygen Studio in Pacific Beach will have you feeling like you’ve stepped into an underwater oasis — and a million miles away from the madness of Garnet Ave., just down the block. Every “Oxyride” includes 45 minutes of high-energy cycling set to vibrant rhythmic music that’ll have you torching up to 500 calories per ride. Your first ride is free, so you can check out the studio and soak up some of the beachy vibes before making any commitments.
