CrossFit has made its mark on the fitness world, and it’s certainly making its mark on America’s Finest City with dozens of gyms (aka “boxes”, in the CrossFit world) holding it down around town. And we’ve rounded up our San Diego favorites so you can get your WOD in before you hit the waves.
CrossFit ATR on Pepsi Dr. was voted “San Diego’s Best CrossFit Gym” two years in a row for a reason. While the gym has all the usual CrossFit staples (barbells, gymnastic rings, and pull-up bars galore), this box goes beyond the workout, emphasizing community and culture. Which means after a particularly grueling WOD, there will be some high-fives and pats on the back waiting for you. Did we mention that the entire place is decked out in bright, graffiti-style murals. Looking to compete? Looking to get back into shape? Looking to understand how to use the equipment? CrossFit Invictus has all your needs covered with eight different goal-based programs, nutrition coaching, a run club, and a paleo meal pick-up service. With three different locations (Point Loma, Sorrento Valley, and downtown) to fit members’ needs, gym-goers are geared up to hit their target goals. Friday Night Lights is more than just a TV show for CrossFit 858. This box hosts “FNL” events to get members working out and celebrating together with potlucks, competitions, cookouts, and CrossFit Open viewings. You can’t beat a place where the community vibes (at both locations in Mission Gorge and Miramar) are almost as strong as the members.
Grow your muscles and your business at CrossFit Humanity. This Mission Hills box offers typical CrossFit training, but puts a heavy lift toward its community, offering after-hours events and a business directory to list members’ local businesses. Don’t just take our word for the strong community vibe — test it out yourself at their weekly free Saturday morning community class. Fitt Tip: on Sundays, CrossFit Humanity offers a girls-only cardio and core class for free for all the ladies looking to get fit!
Bear Republic is a rare beast in the wild in San Diego: a gym downtown! And this one offers a variety of classes, including functional fitness, bootcamp, mobility and conditioning, and weightlifting. Can’t beat traffic to make it to the a class? Bear Republic has you covered with open gym hours all day.
Stay Classy CrossFit
Out-of-town visitor to San Diego? Head to Stay Classy CrossFit in Barrio Logan. Conveniently throwin’ down near the San Diego Convention Center, Stay Classy is the perfect place to get your sweat in while you scope out the city. Don’t worry, though. Contrary to the gym’s name, Stay Classy’s killer workouts are pretty wicked.
Situated in the heart of Pacific Beach, CrossFit Windansea takes full advantage of its beachy location with tons of natural outdoor light and the breezy air from Mission Bay. So it’s the ideal place to crush today’s combination of muscle-ups, box jumps, and burpees. And we won’t tell if you head into Pacific Beach for some post-WOD fish tacos.
With four large locations across Linda Vista, San Ysidro, Santee and downtown, CrossFit Fortius is a staple in the San Diego CrossFit Community. In addition to CrossFit, the gym also offers a variety of classes to get you sweating, including powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, yoga, and gymnastics, so members get a well-rounded fit experience. Fitt Tip: CrossFit Fortius extends a one-week free trial to San Diego locals.
No matter what your fitness level, CrossFit Flood will welcome you with open arms — and then put you to WORK! This Kearny Mesa gyms is not a one-size-fits-all kind of place, so if you’ve never encountered a WOD or you’ve been crushing PRs for years, they are here to meet you where you are (and modify your circuits accordingly). They offer Olympic lifting, too, so if you’ve been looking to perfect snatch, clean, and jerk, they’re knowledgeable coaches will get you there in no time.
CrossFit Coronado is a product of the gym’s proximity to the naval base. This box was founded by two Navy SEALs who created programming uniting gymnastics, bodyweight movements, strength training, and endurance exercises. Muscle & Fitness named this gym one of the toughest workouts in America, and after one sweat session at this box, you’ll understand why. CrossFit Del Mar
CrossFit Del Mar is a box that offers truly offers it all — CrossFit Kids, gymnastics, and bootcamp next to CrossFit classes and open gym time. Not only does the gym vary its programming, it welcomes in youth, high school, collegiate, and professional sports teams to boost strength, flexibility, speed, and endurance. And if meal prepping wasn’t in the cards this week, they’re also a pick-up spot for pre-made meal company Territory Foods, who just so happens to offer a paleo plan.
CrossFit Ocean Beach
CrossFit Ocean Beach brings the box to the beach. Just three blocks from the sand in Ocean Beach, this gym takes advantage of sunny San Diego and brings WODs to their outdoor training area or to the beach, weather permitting. But, trust us — staying inside isn’t so bad, either. The large gym offers a huge Olympic weightlifting floor, Rogue infinity racks, and a sled-pull area in the downstairs garage. Feeling overwhelmed? This place can help you there, offering personal training and fundamentals courses to get you on track.
CrossFit East County
Head east to CrossFit East County for a workout that’s anything but easy. This box breaks down workouts between L1 (tough) and L2 (tougher) depending on participant experience, but also offers masters conditioning for individuals 55+. Fitness for all; what could be better?
Formerly San Diego Athletics, this is not your average CrossFit box. Sure, this gym in the heart of Pacific Beach has classic CrossFit classes, but what they also have is a STRONG class that focuses on strength training and aesthetics, a SWEAT class that focuses on bodyweight exercises and cardio intervals, and a class designed for both moms and those who are expecting. Fitt Tip: this gym is three blocks from the beach, so after you sweat you can soak up some rays, or take a dip to cool off.
At this 6,000-square-foot CrossFit facility in Grantville, community is key — and you’re in good hands. The expert trainers will have your back through every box jump, power snatch, and double under. And you better believe they’re going to stick around after class to chat and make sure you feel good about your workout. Can’t get enough of Outlier CrossFit?
