San Diego Holiday Half Marathon

A half-marathon isn’t exactly the kind of race you can sign up for on a whim. But if you’ve been training and are ready to tackle 13.1 miles, this scenic race is definitely the way to go. You’ll run a relatively flat course through Carmel Valley and finish at Torrey Pines State Beach with a shiny new medal and a great excuse to go back for seconds (or thirds) at Christmas dinner this year.

San Diego Santa Run

There’s nothing quite like seeing thousands of Santas running through the streets of Downtown San Diego. Join the movement this year at the annual Santa Run, a 5k race at which your beard and hat are just as important as your sneakers when it comes to gear. There is also a one-mile course that’s dog-friendly if you need the help of a reindeer to power through the run.

Yoga Social: Holiday Flow

Most yoga classes are more “shhhh” than social, which can be tough if you’re more into making new friends than tapping into your zen. But SD Yoga Social is breaking the norm with a holiday-themed flow at Chula Vista Brewery. Your evening will consist of some quick meditation, an hour-long flow, and a post-yoga celebration that includes menudo (a cozy Mexican soup) and a free pint of beer.

Trilogy Community Yoga Class (recurring)

Trilogy is one of the best places in San Diego to grab a smoothie and zen out for an hour or two — especially when your zen time includes a class on their sky deck, a rooftop yoga space with views for days. If you’ve been considering giving it a try but haven’t found the time to check out the La Jolla hideaway just yet, now’s your chance — they’re offering a weekly community class until the end of the year (and it’s totally free!)

Ohana Holiday Run 5K

As you can probably tell from the name (ohana means family), this 5k race is meant to be run alongside your family. And whether that means you and your kiddos (there’s a one-miler for the little guys) or if your friends are more your running fam, you won’t want to miss this holiday-themed race. And while it’s being held on a Sunday, you’ll definitely want break out your favorite Aloha Friday shirt for the theme.

North Park Santa Run

Thanks to an emphasis on local brews and community services, this boozy five-miler is one of San Diego’s most beloved holiday traditions. Your registration gets you a Santa suit (complete with a sack filled with toys to hand out along the route) and a pint of beer at four different breweries around North Park. Fair warning — five miles on a belly full of beer isn’t for the faint of heart (we recommend pre-gaming with a cookie and plenty of water).

Dirty December II

If paved race courses just aren’t cutting it for you this holiday season, the Dirty December Challenge might be exactly what you need to get it in gear before you hit the cookie tray. Prepare to pedal it out on a dirt course in either the fixed-gear, single-speed, or open categories — the last of which includes basically anything with two pedals and a set of handlebars (creativity is encouraged!).

Solar Turbines 5k Run/Walk at the Holiday Bowl Parade

Forget about NYE — once Christmas is over, it’s officially bowl game season. In San Diego, that means the Holiday Bowl and all of the festivities that come with it. One of the best ways to celebrate the annual game (and work off some of those Christmas cookies) is running the Solar Turbines 5K. There’s even live music and an entire parade at the finish line — how’s that for motivation?

Donuts and Deadlifts

Just Go Lift is one of the best gyms in San Diego for anyone looking to train for an obstacle course race or simply hone their dynamic strength skills. And because they understand exactly how daunting the start of a new year can be, they’re giving you a chance to get a head start on your resolutions with some healthy competition (and donuts, of course!). Some experience with Olympic lifting is recommended, but there will be deadlift-based challenges for competitors of all levels.
