Running and wine, we can’t think of a better combo. And that’s exactly what you can expect at the annual Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon & Rosé 5K. So, mark your calendar for July 18–19, 2020 because we’ve got the perfect excuse to spend a weekend in wine country.
This iconic event is nothing like your average road race. With panoramic views and infectious energy, there’s a reason runners everywhere rank Napa to Sonoma high on their bucket lists. In fact, thousands make the trip to California each year to take on this challenging and rewarding course.
If you’re lacing up for the half-marathon on Sunday, prepare for a fast, point-to-point route kicking off from Cuvaison Winery with a muscle-torching ascent up the infamous “Butt Burner Hill.” Don’t worry, though — after you’re over the crest, the hardest part of the race is behind you. From there, keep crushing the miles as you soak up views of the Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Preserve, San Pablo Bay, and Mt. Tamalpais, not to mention acres upon acres of grape-filled vineyards.
Then, on the home stretch, you’ll be coasting along shady country roads, swapping sweaty high-fives with your fellow runners as you cross the finish line at the historic Sonoma Plaza in front of City Hall. And that’s where the real pay-off will be waiting — the Wine & Music Festival.
For the rest of the morning and into the afternoon, you’ll get to hang out, put your feet up, and enjoy tastings from over 40 area wineries (don’t forget to grab your commemorative wine glass!), massage tents, food, live music, and so much more. It’s going to be one hell of an after-party.
If you’re more interested in the wine than running the Sonoma hills, the Rosé 5K is for you. You’ll hit the starting line a day early, on Saturday. Expect the same awesome views and feel-good vibes, plus plenty of extra time to check out the Expo at Sonoma Plaza.
After the race is in the bag (and you’ve got a new PR to brag about), you’ll have the rest of the weekend to explore the area’s many, many wineries. And on Sunday, you can circle back to cheer on some of your new friends at the half-marathon.
Just like fine wine, the Napa to Sonoma Wine Country Half Marathon & Rosé 5K keeps getting better with age, and this year’s slated to be nothing short of epic. Registration is officially open, so snag your ticket and start prepping for a memorable experience you’ll be talking about long after you’ve finished your last sip of vino.
