For those of you new to the Bay Area, summer in San Francisco is notoriously cold (like “the winter that all your East Coast friends complained about” cold). But, a short drive outside of the city provides a warm escape from the wind and Karl The Fog.
And the Traveler Surf Club in Pacifica is exactly the type of summer fun we need. Only a 15-minute drive out of the city, this little surf spot is the perfect place to hang on a lazy weekend — especially if you’re looking for sun.
Traveler Surf Club was started by San Francisco local Julie Cox. After spending one too many freezing mornings surfing in the Pacific Ocean, she decided to create a haven for surfers and swimmers alike.
What began as a small retail shop in Pacifica quickly turned into a membership-based club for all types of ocean-lovers. And the big ticket is that It’s conveniently situated right next to one of the best surf breaks in Northern California, so dedicated surfers and newbies alike can congregate (and, most importantly, warm up) at the club.
If you’re not a surfer, don’t fret. Traveler Surf & Swim Club has plenty to do, even if you’re not about to get a wetsuit on.
With a beautiful, sunny garden out back, anyone can relax over a cup of tea or coffee. There are also warm outdoor showers, a storage area, and saunas(!).
Though, we have a feeling the atmosphere might get you in the spirit to hang 10. If you’ve been thinking about trying your hand at surfing anywhere — this might be your best place to start. The welcoming Traveler community offers surf lessons with pro instructors, wetsuits, and boards. And if you’re just dropping in for the day? A day pass will only run you $20 ($15 if you’re a Pacifica resident) with access to all Traveler amenities.
So, if you’re craving some warm sun this summer, take a short ride to Pacifica and spend an afternoon at the Traveler. It’s the perfect way to cool down (or warm up!).
