You’ll no doubt have seen the sparkly blue waters of the Bondi Icebergs pools splashed across your social media feeds, but what even many locals don’t know about Australia’s most Instagrammed location is the epic wellness club hidden below deck.
Bondi Icebergs Gym reopened in March 2019 after an extensive renovation and refurbishment by Sydney interior architecture firm, Akin Atelier.
Though, don’t let the high-end design, epic location, and views over North Bondi and the Pacific fool you; the gym means business with world-class trainers and all the equipment necessary to have members looking and feeling their best.
Co-founders Ben and Lauren Cush opted for machinery from Technogym and Aussie Strength, brands they say function above others and complement the design of the gym aesthetically. The interior design features an oversized, glowing halo on the ceiling that centres the space, while fully customisable panels by SOLID Racks adorn the walls and hold equipment for use.
And because we all have our own preferred ways of working out, the majority of the equipment is portable and able to be moved around the gym — we’re talking about sunrise PT sessions out on the deck overlooking the rolling waves.
“Members can train inside the gym or outside on our deck in the fresh ocean air, but we’ll soon be starting [formal] classes on the deck overlooking the pool and ocean in the near future,” says co-founder Lauren Cush, adding: “It is a gym experience like no other in the world.”
Creating a close-knit community feel that resembles something of a fit family is important to founders Ben and Lauren and their team of trainers. Thus, Bondi Icebergs Gym reopened with just 200 memberships, establishing an exclusive, uncrowded experience without the pretension — “a community of good people, a place where people feel comfortable, and a place where people leave feeling better than they did when they arrived,” co-founder Ben Cush explained to Fitt.
The gym supports all fitness levels and ages, so no matter your workout style, with personal training that includes elements of kickboxing, Muay Thai, core conditioning, and nutritional consultations, there’s really something for everyone.
A membership here goes beyond what other gyms in the area can offer. Part of the deal in signing up as a regular means year-round access to the adjoining Bondi Icebergs facilities that include the iconic lap pools and sauna.
You can hit the gym for a PT session, follow up your workout with a dip in the salty waters, and finish off with a muscle-soothing sauna. Sounds like a pretty good Sunday morning to us.
Bondi Icebergs has been an Eastern Suburbs landmark for 90 years, and since 1929, the summer spot has become a central meeting hub for the Bondi community.
Whether it’s Yoga by the Sea (a separate outdoor class that costs $25) or a Sunday lunch of fresh seafood, seasonal snacks, and arvo cocktails at the Bistro on the balcony, the new Bondi Icebergs Gym is the cherry on top of this already thriving health and lifestyle club.
