Ever since basketball player LeBron James was spotted on a VersaClimber machine a few years back, the world has become super curious about the StairMaster-like workout; and Rise Nation—set up by LA-based trainer to the stars Jason Walsh—has been gaining serious popularity.

And after arriving in Melbourne last year, Rise Nation has promised to hit Sydney’s shores before the end of the year, becoming the third official studio outside of the US (behind Rise Nation Philippines).

Rise Nation is popular for a reason. The full-body workout activates all major muscle groups, meaning you’ll get the most efficient and major calorie burn… in the shortest amount of time. It’s total-body conditioning, strength training, and cardio-endurance building all in one 30-minute workout — using only a single piece of equipment to achieve that, might we add.

So, how exactly does it work? All you need to do is strap your feet into your numbered VersaClimber, wait as darkness descends, grab the handles, and CLIMB… like you’ve never climbed before! There will be long movements, low and slow movements, combos, and sprints — and absolutely zero breaks. But then again, seeing as it’s only 30 minutes, how bad can that be?


Okay, anyone will tell you that Rise is rigorous — a class is high-energy effort in overdrive. There are three classes and levels to choose from: anyone new to the VersaClimber—no matter how fit—is recommended to start with Level 1 (at least to learn the lingo and get used to the arm-leg VersaClimber coordination) which will see you reach somewhere between 700–1500ft. After a couple of classes, it’s a quick progression onto Level 2, which ups the ante and tempo for a higher climb (between 1500–3000ft). Level 3 is the finale — an “extreme elevation” class that’s longer (45 minutes) and much harder, encouraging you to reach new-found heights excess of 3500ft for one outrageous, heart-pumping workout.

But there’s enough to help you persevere through the gruelling classes: from the much-needed motivational instructors to the LED modern disco lights (a welcoming distraction) and background beats that will help push you to your limits. Seriously, don’t underestimate the power of a playlist here — each of the instructors spend time curating the perfect 30-minute soundtrack so you can crush the choreographed climbing and learn how to really move to the music.
