As Sydney’s ever-expanding fitness studio scene broadens by the day, creating “an experience” has become vital. And if it’s a dose of self-care you’re searching for, paired with a sweaty workout, look no further than Ben Mills’ retreat in Double Bay, Shelter.
After being fed up by having to travel between various different training and recovery facilities, Mills integrated five concepts under one roof in the form of a luxurious wellness centre blurring the lines between spa and gym. And with the recent unveiling of a new, HIIT-based ‘Shelter Box’ offering, Shelter has become the place to escape, rejuvenate, and sweat.
Mills says he named the concept Shelter to covey he had created a “safe space” for his clients. And there’s evidence that every aspect of the brand was created for all ’round well-being. Shelter offers infrared and traditional saunas, ice baths, a juicery, and a combination of cycle and boxing classes, making it a full-service training and recovery facility.
And that’s just the beginning of its allure. The space itself was designed to resonate with all the senses — texture, sound, light, and even scent have been expressed throughout the entire studio. It was created as a luxurious yet non-intimidating sanctuary — so successfully even, that it was the recipient of Belle Coco Republic’s award for commercial design of 2018.
The new 45-minute ‘Shelter Box’ class, which launched September 2019, combines boxing and low-impact and high-intensity conditioning and has a dedicated space located directly opposite Shelter’s main Double Bay studio.
“[It] has been curated to feel somewhat meditative. The Shelter Box class runs as 10 guided rounds, split between the boxing bags and the floor. It’s empowering and fun. No experience required,” Mills says.
The new space, as he told us, remains aligned with the flagship studio, “Shelter Boxing remains luxurious and uniquely Australian.” That means you can expect the same commitment to airy, welcoming interiors to complete the vibe as you throw jabs, crosses, and hooks.
With the new class adding to Shelter’s existing RIDE class, a 45-minute high-intensity cycle class focussing on rhythm and music, it paved the way for the launch of their third class format. The ‘Punch & Pedal’ is a combo of SoulCycle and Rumble vibes, with a mix of boxing and cycle, promising to burn “in the best way possible”. Good thing there are ice baths on offer here for after!
And operating by the motto ‘Feels like a spa - works like a gym’, you’ll have the nourishment, community, and recovery to look forward to afterward. The vegan smoothie bar, for one, is designed specifically to refuel you post workout, energising and alkalising the body with a range of unique smoothies. We recommend enjoying the Gumnut smoothie (a blend of PB, cinnamon, banana, macadamia, hemp protein, and other goodness) in Shelter’s courtyard.
If after your juice, workout, and ice bath, you’ve been convinced Shelter has thought of everything for overall well-being, they have, so all that’s left to do is make it a routine. The studio offers weekly memberships, in addition to different class levels and sauna packs.
See you there — we’ll be the ones relaxing in the sauna with a juice or two!
