But avoiding meat is no longer a reason to eschew traditionally “meaty” foods — especially in a healthy metropolis like Sydney, where the city’s best burger bars have gone crazy with vegan options. And if you’re on the search for the best ones, don’t worry — we’ve done the hard work for you, and here’s our pick of Sydney’s best plant-based burgers!

An absolute staple for any Sydney vegetarian, Soul Burger in Parramatta, Glebe, Newtown, and off Perouse Road boasts an extensive menu of mouth-watering burger goodness. Every single one is 100% vegan, meaning you won’t be stuck choosing your dinner by process of elimination. And if “beef” isn’t your bag, they also offer chicken, pulled pork, and falafel sandwiches that are all missing the meat. Though, if we had to pick a favourite, we’d be torn between the Portugese Fried “Chicken” with apple slaw and peri peri sauce, or the Chilli “Beef” with jalapeño and herbed mayo. Fitt Tip: Soul Burger is now open from lunch till late and is available on all your favourite meal delivery apps.

Known for serving up health-conscious fare and healthy, flavourful burgers, you would expect an impressive repertoire of veggie and vegan fare on the menu at this fast-casual spot. The pick of the bunch veggie patties is the Garden Goodness, made with beetroot and vegan cheese and available on a low-carb SuperBun. But Grill’d also serves at least six different Beyond Burgers if you’re craving something a bit meatier. It’s hard to pass up the delectable sides, too — both the zucchini and sweet potato chips are 100% vegetarian. Hungry yet? There’s a Grill’d in pretty much every major shopping centre, so we guarantee you’re not far from your next healthy burger fix.

The only thing we love more than a 100% vegan burger menu is a clever, pun-inspired restaurant name. Voilà! Presenting Lord of the Fries in Parramatta, Newtown, Haymarket, and on George Street. Don’t be fooled into thinking LOTF is just another franchised chip shop — it’s vegan, kosher, and halal, with plenty of GF options, too. They’ve been around for years and are still going strong, so the fresh ingredients and zero-additives commitment of this shop seems to have won over the loyal Sydneysiders. Well, that attention to quality, plus six delectable vegan burgers to choose from (like the Spicy or the New Guru), all made with a traditional veggie patty and zesty, house-blended sauces. Obviously, you can’t leave without an order of vegan loaded fries — it would be rude not to.

Your go-to for vegan Indian is now serving up one of the best plant-based burgers in the East! Gluten-free and flavour-packed, Nalini’s’ tasty Veggie Burger comes stacked with a sweet potato and lentil patty, fresh crunchy salad, and dollops of house-made vegan mayo and spicy ketchup. As of July 2019, it’s only offered at the Bronte store, but you can chow down on one for lunch or dinner seven days a week.

BA is a burger darling in the local restaurant scene, and for good reason. With a tempting menu of 20+ burgers to choose from, there’s plenty to love about this American-style gem. Best of all, in addition to two signature mushroom burgers, any of the six chicken burgers can be served with shroom instead of meat. That means you can sink your teeth into a Harlem Heat with jalapeño and Sriracha, or a South Side with pickles and crunchy slaw. And did we mention all burgers can be served nude — they’ll arrive sandwiched between lettuce instead of buns!

Another uber-cool burger joint in trendy Surry Hills, Ze Pickle has quickly earned a reputation as the go-to for quirky menu items and relaxed, hipster interiors. There are a few excellent vegetarian options to choose from, including That Vego Friend burger—featuring a truffle butter grilled shroom—or the Southern Hack, a plant-based crispy fried schnitzel, vegan cheeze, fried onion straws, and ZP sauce. Round out your meal with kumara fries or “Guacitas”, vegan guac & queso mini-tortilla snacks that are great for sharing. Fitt Tip: Try one of the organic local beers on tap.

Much-loved Manly destination The Hold has upped it’s vegan menu, now offering a handful of different plant-based burgers to satisfy your fast food craving. All burgers on the menu are made with an artisanal blend of natural plant proteins, creating a juicy, tasty, and ‘meaty’ experience, which gets fairly close to the real deal. Try Blue Beards slow boat—with jalapeño jam and coconut flakes—or The Mandarin Voyage, with char siu pulled mushrooms and house chilli sauce! Oh, and did we mention the plant-based chicken nuggets, loaded fries with guacamole, and triple-cooked sweet potato wedges!? Fitt Tip: There are multiple swaps to “health” up your menu, including a helping of chef salad on the side, plus GF or “naked” options for your bun choice.

Everyone’s favourite vegan paradise in Petersham has just gone next-level with the addition of menu items that bring a plant-based twist to some Aussie classics, including seriously tempting burgers. Choose from the O.G. (with crispy tempeh and apple slaw) or the “Cheese” Burger with a beef-less pattie, relish, aioli, and pickles. And to wash it all down, there are loads of dairy-free smoothies and fresh-squeezed juices on offer, too. It’s open seven days from 7am daily, so there’s plenty of time to fit in your next burger fix!

The Green Lion brings plant-based classic pub grub to Rozelle! Serving up delicious vegan food from the ground floor of a traditional drinking establishment, the only thing missing from this iconic tableau is the chicken parma. But the Green Lion will do you one better. The burger menu is literally mouth-watering, with nine different variations on offer, ranging from the classic (meat-free) cheeseburger to an inventive black bean, brown rice, and quinoa pattie and a crumbed portobello mushroom slider. Every burger comes with your choice of fries or coleslaw, and you can add a hashbrown, “cheese”, or extra veggies to round out the meal.

Think of this casual spot as the suburbs’ answer to plant-based burgers. With laid-back vibes and indoor and (pup-friendly!) outdoor seating, this Glenhaven eatery is the perfect place to stop in for a quick bite, hang out with your mates, or settle in with your lappy and get some work done. But let’s get to the menu. The Tuckshop has two plant-based options on offer, both of which are incredible. Take your pick of a panko-fried mushroom burger topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, and vegan mayo or a Beyond Meat delight featuring house-made ketchup, vegan mustard, and cheeze.
