Spadina and Richmond St. West is officially Toronto’s unofficial boxing district. Within three blocks, you’ll find circuit-style classes at the new Drop Boxing and body-positive workouts at BOLO. But it’s Calgary’s uber-popular UNDRCARD that has us grabbing our gloves this time.
Opening doors June 7, 2019, UNDRCARD is the latest gym to enter Toronto’s boxing ring, and it’s in a class all of its own. Throw away your perception of traditional three-minute rounds. Instead, get ready to fight against the only opponent that matters: yourself.
In boxing lingo, the word ‘undercard’ is used to describe the fights leading up to the main event. At this studio, the main event is your life. All of the trainers come from an athletic or boxing background and are at the helm of 50-minute group boxing classes combining cardio, strength, and endurance-based moves that will have you pushing past what you believed you were capable of. You’ll leave feeling like a champ, in and out of the gym.
Oh, did we mention it’s all set to music? UNDRCARD is the place to get a beat for that bob-and-weave — every single punch is synced up to music. Studio co-owner and DJ Joanna ‘Magik’ Majcherkiewicz told us, “It’s like the Soul Cycle of boxing”, so you know you’re in for a good time with good tunes.
This Adelaide St. West spot is a perfect mix of tough and approachable, similar to its no-joke—yet totally fun—workout style. Black and white gloves with printed sayings like ‘sweet dreams’ line the entryway, and a crisp, white boxing ring is out in the middle of the floor for everyone to see. The walls are covered in black, white, and yellow art, but it’s the main workout room that really makes this place pop.
The lights are low and the music is loud. Over 30 punching bags hang from the ceiling, ready to take a beating. When class starts, you’ll find it easy to zone out from what everyone else is doing and to zone in on you. New to boxing or a little self-conscious? Book one of the ‘secret bags’ tucked away in the corners of the room.
And if you try a class and just can’t get enough, you’ll be happy to know UNDRCARD is working on rolling out a few different programs this fall — be on the lookout for footwork lessons, technical skill classes, and even private training.
But if you’re ready to rumble now, we’ll see you in the ring. Fitt Tip: Need to refuel post sweat sesh? Our go-to, Impact Kitchen, is right across the street!
