Our salad game is about to get a major upgrade. Montreal-born Mandy’s, the “Sweetgreen of the North”, is making its debut in Toronto this year.
In past years, salad bar after salad bar has sprung up across the city with hopes of hooking the lunch crowd willing to pay top dollar for a premium salad. Yet, it takes a special persuasion to make people actually crave eating a salad. Cult-favourite US chain Sweetgreen has figured it out… but so has Mandy’s.
With seven Montreal-area shops that look like Parisian bistros, a food truck, ultra-creative signature salads, and a loyal following willing to smuggle salads on the one-hour flight from Quebec, Mandy’s move to the Six might legitimately halt Sweetgreen’s manifest destiny at the border.
Details are yet to drop about where and when the pink-hued storefront will land, but when they do, plan to get to know “The ‘Fave’” on a daily basis: a sultry mix of romaine, arugula, avocado, broccoli, and baked pita chips drizzled with honey mustard vinaigrette.
