With incredible vegan spots popping up all around the city, and even the “Vegandale” movement, it’s becoming difficult to remember who’s offering what. To stand out from the crowd, however, Globally Local (hailing from London, Ontario) adds an interesting twist on menu items you might have grown up with by veganifiying traditional fast-food signatures.
They’re about to make their entrance to Toronto, and they’re bringing their crowd-favourite vegan version of the Big Mac with them.
James and Lia McInnes, the couple who launched the chain together, started with just one food truck in London, Ontario a few years ago. As the plant-based revolution took off just about everywhere, the owners of Globally Local saw a niche they could bring to the market: sustainable fast-food. Their vision was to find a way to balance the desire for cravings while catering to diet restrictions and offering healthier options to well-known fast-food spots. Some might call their top-sellers “vegan knockoffs”.
There’s the “Famous Burger”, the number one on their menu that emulates the Big Mac with two house-made chickpea patties. The “Vopper”, complete with smoked “bacUn”, looks just like Burger King’s flame-grilled classic. Whichever chicken sandwich chain you think reigns supreme, they’ve got a “Crispy ChickUn” that can rival it. And they’ve even got the “Preposterous Burger”, an obvious nod to the vegan, bleeding Impossible Burger.
They quickly found themselves expanding to numerous locations around London, including a 24-hour drive-thru. That meant no matter what time your vegan cravings kick in, you could count on Globally Local to hit the spot.
When it comes to healthier alternatives, it’s common to assume that a compromise on quality or flavour has to be made. Thankfully, Globally Local is dedicated to ensuring that their customers never have to choose between taste and dietary preferences. Whether you’re in the mood for burgers, chicken sandwiches, or all-day breakfast, it’s hard to look past the vegan-friendly meals that they offer.
By mid-September, Globally Local will make its official entrance to Toronto’s vegan food scene at 492 College Street. And while they won’t have a 24-hour drive-thru like their London location, we can hope they’ll be open until 10pm, like the dining room at their original location.
In the meantime, their popular food truck will continue to tour around Canada as they continue to plan their future expansion. Follow along with their schedule here, and if you’re just too eager for College St, make the two-hour drive to London for a late-night Vopper and coconut soft serve!
