TURF, A POPULAR SWEAT SPOT, CAFÉ, AND HANGOUT, IS ADDING A NEW SPACE DOWNTOWN

Sure, you've got your favourite studio that's perfectly sandwiched between a great coffee shop and superfood brunch spot. Throw in a visit to the cute shop down the block, some friends, and you've got yourself the perfect day off.

But throw all of this under one roof and you've got TurF: all the ingredients for the perfect day. The fitness studio and healthy café has been a community hub—a place to work out, hang out, or take out—for Kitsilano since 2017 and now looks to replicate its success in downtown Vancouver beginning winter 2019.

PUSH, HOLD, SWEAT, REPEAT

Sweat any way you like (and more than you anticipated): strength, yoga, boxing, and hip-hop step all find a home at TurF. Like the space, each class takes a holistic approach to physical and mental wellness. Top classes included The Class by Taryn Toomey, TurF Strength, and we have a thing for MISFITSTUDIO’s signature classes taught by Trilby.

The Class is loud and intense and—outside its strict following in LA and NYC—is only available here. TurF Strength is all about non-stop movement, with muscle-sculpting moves followed by HIIT or Tabata circuit. MISFITSTUDIO’s collection of classes can be anything from GET SHIFTED—a music-driven, joyous movement class—to GET WORKED, a combination of Pilates, yoga, and dance.

POWER BOWLS + LOCAL WINE = BALANCE

Some studios sell coconut water and energy bars. TurF is not that type of studio. The full-service cafe—with a streetside patio and two long, communal tables—serves mostly vegan and gluten-free eats, uses local ingredients as much as possible, and is super tasty. TurF touches various pillars of “healthy eating” without all the box-ticking and stress of the militant diet mantras (i.e., the exact reason plant-based eating is on the rise).

The cafe stacks a well-rounded roster of bowls: from power porridge to housemade granola to afternoon favourites like the kimchi ‘n mash. Another option? Throw a “happy protein” (read: humane meats and vegan sausages) on a salad or toast for that extra heartiness.

Plus, there’s beer on the menu and bottles of wine in the to-go fridge, so you know these guys are all about enjoying working out as much as you enjoy your community, food, and balance.

Know that there’s also a small shop at the back of the space. Expect conscious, locally-made clothing, and elegant jewelry, along with the expected studio swag (hats, shirts, and water bottles for the fan club).

SOMETHING “ENORMOUS”

With TurF 2.0, expect more of the same from founding sisters Deanne and Delaney Schweitzer: a space full of possibility and joy, “bringing together the essential to live a life that’s enormous.”

The second edition of TurF was just announced at the beginning of September 2019, and as of this writing, the location hasn’t been formally revealed, but we have heard that progress has been already been made on turning the new first-floor development into a flourishing home for even more boutique classes, avocado toast, and Moja Coffee.
