F45’s first DC location on U St. has been crushing it — not just in class attendance but also in the transformational results of the members. So much so that the owners are opening a second location to serve the Columbia Heights area. Demo starts at the end of January, so you can expect a grand opening sometime in the next few months. And Virginia, don’t feel inferior — you’ve got your slice of the F45 pie coming your way, too. This functional workout studio will create a home in both Tysons and Ashburn early this year.
Forget the restaurants where you have to scour the menu to find something good for you. At Flower Child, all you’ll find is nutritious and scratch-made, so no matter what you order, you’re doing something right. Buildable plates, veggies galore, clean protein, and more — just come hungry. So, if positive vibes in a laid-back space with wholesome food is your jam, you’re in luck. Flower Child will open its doors in DC’s Foggy Bottom area early this year. Oh, and they’re owned by the same folks as healthy eatery True Food Kitchen, who’s opening its doors in Arlington as well in spring 2019.
At DC’s first-and-only VersaClimber studio, a modern and improved StairMaster-type machine, you’ll be in and out in 30 minutes. PULSE offers 30-minute CLIMB classes set to curated tracks and energy on another level. The crew highlights intentionality in more than just their workouts, all the way down to the lockers equipped with personal USB charging stations. Recharge your body by spiking your endorphins, then refuel with complimentary brewed coffee and food from local partners such as JRINK juice bar and Mighty Meals, available for purchase in the reception area.
When it comes to healthy food, oftentimes you need not look further than what comes from the Earth. Or in this case, DIRT. The Miami-based healthy counter-service restaurant and wellness bar has gained cult-like following down south for its wholesome ingredients and ability to cater to nearly every dietary preference. And now they hope to deliver the same promise to the Ballston Exchange in spring 2019. Expect clean eats like artisan toasts, salads, grain bowls, and ultra-seasonal entree plates.
Interval training is all the rage, and locally-owned boutique studio Elevate did it so well at their original location on 14th St., they expanded to southwest DC, finding a second home on M St. If you’re on a mission to be the most well-rounded athlete you can be, Elevate will help you get there with their complementary focus on both strength and endurance. Plus, the owner, David Magida, knows a thing or two about training — he’s both a founding member of the Reebok Spartan Race Pro Team and the host of NBC Sports’ Spartan Race. If an adventure race is on your list this year, you may have just found the place that will help you get there… and maybe even to the podium.
In the middle of winter, we all crave a little sunshine and tropical paradise. Pokéworks is bringing the aloha to DC in the form of fresh Hawaiian-inspired poke bowls. Here, you can create your own masterpiece from start to finish — bowl, burrito, salad… you name it. This is poke for the people and by the people, with all the fish and fixin’s you can imagine. While there’s a lot of poke places springing up, Pokéworks sets themselves apart with their commitment to using only responsibly-sourced seafood as well as seasonal and natural ingredients. Check out their hefty list of seven DC locations coming this year, and don’t hesitate to bring your leis to work to celebrate your lunch outing in style.
If you’re a fitness junkie, exercise often serves as a healthy way to let out some aggression. This year, try punching something heavy with a purpose at BASH Boxing’s newly opened Rosslyn location, with a second slated for Ballston Quarter sometime in 2019. With boxing conditioning as their focus, you’ll torch through several HIIT rounds on their water-filled Aqua Training Bags combined with various strength modalities like free weights and resistance bands. Wrap up your hands and secure your gloves for 45-minutes of punching, lifting, moving, sweating, and all the stress-release.
Mediterranean food screams healthy, and Little Sesame offers flavors and dishes worth the hype. One of the two chefs behind this Mediterranean concept grew up in DC and is proud to marry his commitment to responsible farming practice with his love of food, all in service to his community. Their menu is packed with beautifully-crafted hummus bowls, pita sandwiches, salads, and (dairy-free) sweets. With an offering like this and a mission to leave the world a better place, it’s no surprise they outgrew their start-up presence in the basement of DGS Delicatessen in Dupont Circle. As of fall 2018, you can now visit them at their new, permanent home on L St. to savor the sesame.
Who knew running on a treadmill could be so much fun? Orangetheory Fitness brings new meaning to treadmill workouts and also incorporates rowing for their bursts of cardio in any given class. Pair that with strength training and the heart rate monitor display in class and you’ve got a dynamic workout that holds you accountable as your fellow fit friends can see on the big screen just how hard you’re pushing. OTF opened its doors to the Eastern Market community this past fall and they’re open as early at 5am. Early birds, this one’s for you.
